Dante trembled with barely restrained anger. Outrage. Fury. He had to let it dissipate and disperse. If he opened his power here, all the mortals behind him would vaporize. He had protected them well enough from the full force of God and Lucifer’s Sundering and his own raging power. Had he not done so, they would have melted. His fists balled. His scarf lifted. Lucifer’s words crashed about his mind. She is gone. Who do I fight for now?

CHAPTER 29

Annette drew ragged breaths. Her heart was a blacksmith’s anvil – pounded by successive stokes of its own beat. It clanged and shuddered under her ribs. Her shirt was wet, her hands clammy yet she shivered. Goose pimples had exploded over her skin. The hairs on her arms and neck stood. Her mind was racing. The great reason is gone.

Annette couldn’t believe what had just happened. It was so far beyond the wildest fantasy as to make them appear mundane by comparison.

The beings of the Christian faith existed. They were real. The greatest of them had just held a conversation before breaching some barrier in existence and opening portals in the air to retreat into their own Realms. The human mind should be a quagmire. A wasteland. Yet Annette was staggered by the sheer resilience of humanity. What they could overcome in scarce breaths was truly astonishing. Even when faced with entities that were so far beyond them, so alien in essence, they could recover with frightening ease. They might be bloodied, they might be beaten, their souls might be meek, but they were gathering themselves. Standing and looking out at the last who remained, perhaps fifty meters beyond the front line of people, yawning holes in the ground around him, boulders scattered about, some with a glossy, bubbled veneer – like they’d melted.

Annette’s lip was trembling, her eyes moist as she looked upon Dante’s vibrating figure. I cannot believe it is truly him. He was beginning to glow. Hair starting to lift. Scarf starting to roam. Power sparking off him. Can a god feel anger?

“Is this really happening?” Tom said from beside her, kneeling on his haunches. Most of the audience was the same, though some had stood and wandered about, lost. “That was … God and … Lucifer,” he breathed. “It can’t be. It can’t be.”

“But it is, Uncle Tom. It is. These are the Supreme Three,” Annette whispered.

“We were so wrong,” Scott said hoarsely from his seated position. “Were thought they might be angels and demons. They are so much more,” he was shaking his head. “God. Lucifer. The highest and lowest of Christianity. Lucifer is no fallen angel. He is of a power equal to God. Our texts are so wrong. And Dante … he is their enemy.”

“They’re real. It’s all real,” Emma breathed.

“Annette,” her uncle said, “that is Dante,” he nodded to the figure still out there among the scattered boulders, baking soil and three huge holes in the earth. He was at least seventy meters from her, if not more.
